» About our trainer - Mary

I have always had a love of horses from a very young age. I started taking lessons when I was 9 years old in Golden Gate Park, San Francisco. From there I sponsored various horses. My favorite horse was Soledad, a 15 year old Throughbred. We showed Hunter/Jumper for several years, usually placing in every class. We were quite a team. As I got older, I married and had kids so I ended up leaving the horse world for about 30 years. In 2010, I sponsored a horse named Bella from a friend of mine. It was like I had never missed a day. I feel my most comfortable when I am on a horse, it is where I am meant to be. Now, 3 years later, I own Bella, a cute and sassy Arabian/ Welsh, and have acquired another horse, Tie, an Arabian/Saddlebred, or Sport Horse. I have shown Bella in Hunter/Jumper Schooling shows and she has place first in pleasure and hunter classes.

I started teaching in 2011 at my previous barn and now at Topiary Farms since February of 2013. I ride and teach English and can instruct the Western rider as well. I love to teach kids, to see their face light up when they get the horse to do something they want it to do. My students range in ages from mid-teens to mid 50’s. I believe when learning how to ride a horse you need to also know how to handle a horse, from the ground up. Safety is always a priority then, of course, having fun.
